With the winter season upon us, furnace repairs start to show up to fix any heating issues you may have. After repairs are done with a professional HVAC technician, it’s important to ask them about your heating system and how to prevent any problems in the future. Here are some questions to ask to put you in the right direction:

1. What Caused the Problem?

This should be the first question to ask your HVAC technician after they finish the problem. Understanding why the issue happened could help you understand if you can prevent it from occurring or if it was an issue you might have caused. Would acting sooner have made a difference? Understanding what caused the issue from your HVAC technician will help you avoid this same issue to reoccur again and save you money.

2. Where did the Problem Happen?

A heating system has different components that require a professional HVAC technician to understand what the issue is. Asking them where the problem happened can help you know where it happened in the heating system and your HVAC technician will explain it to you clearly. They’ll explain comprehensively of the area it happened and why the problem occurred there.

3. How was the Problem Solved?

After it’s been fully repaired, it’s important to ask how it was solved from your HVAC technician. It might have been solved from a small issue or something more complex that needed more time. Was there a part that was broken or out of place? Did it need to be repaired or replaced? Was the issue more complicated than that? It’s important to ask these questions so you have a greater level of understanding how the problem was solved and to keep it in working condition.

4. Is the Repair a Long-Term or Short-Term Solution?

It’s important to know if this is going to be a repair that will take months or if this is a quick fix. Depending on your budget and what needs to be fixed, you might get a less expensive solution to solve your heating issues. Or it might be a complicated issue that will take months and needs to be postponed after winter. This needs to be asked sooner rather than later so that there are no surprises for you down the road.

5. Any Steps I Should Take Moving Forward?

After understanding the problem and why it occurred, it’s important to ask what steps you should take moving forward. Your HVAC technician will tell you what you need to do moving forward like having annual maintenance done and changing your air filter. Ask for any tips to help maintain your heating system so it won’t cause problems in the future. It’s possible your HVAC technician noticed your heating system might need a full replacement because of the age and wear of the system. Depending on your system, they might provide more specific advice that should be followed to ensure your heating system is working efficiently.

6. How Long Will My Heating System Last?

It’s important in knowing the long-term health of your system and how long you have it to last. Typically heating systems can last 15 to 20 years but if you’re having problems much earlier, you need to determine why that is and what to do moving forward. It’s possible you need to replace your heating system with a new one that will last you much longer and save you money. Asking for the age of your heating system and preventative measures will help you understand how long you can wait before you’ll need a full replacement.
